DESCRIPTION:What country\, friends\, is this?\nAnd thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges. \nTHIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, is located in downtown Fort Bragg at the beautiful Cobalt Gallery\, thanks to Button Quinn\, artist and gallery owner who has graciously made the space available to us. The readings are the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 4–6 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, January 12\, 2025\, featuring Zida Borcich\,* followed by open mic readings. There is a signup sheet and each poet reads for 5 minutes.  Please get this around far and wide\, as we’d like to reach all over Mendocino County and beyond. Thanks\, and looking forward to seeing you Sunday\, January 12th at the Cobalt Gallery. \nPEGASUS SOARS NO MATTER WHAT\,\nLarry Felson & Joe Smith\n510-684-8270 \n*Zida Borcich \nZida Borcich is a mom\, grandma\, journalist\, letterpress printer\, graphic designer\, jazz singer\, and occasional poet. She lives on the Mendocino Coast of northern California. Since 2010\, she has published Real Estate Magazine\, a monthly that features ads and a single\, locally focused story. She writes many of the stories\, along with a column titled “It’s REAL.” Happiest times are spent with her daughters\, grandkids\, and beloved partner\, and when she is not cooking\, traveling\, singing\, or gardening\, she hangs out with a big collection of cherished friends who reside in the nest of creativity\, intelligence\, beauty\, and fun that is her community. The works in her first book of poetry\, What It Seemed Then—Poems & a Fable were gathered from many years of sporadic poetry writing spells. The act of gathering these pieces into one place has been a most engaging project and she is surprised to note that\, “It’s turned into a kind of inadvertent autobiography.” \nFOR THE LIFE OF THE PRINTER \nFor twenty-seven years\, the author had a letterpress print shop on Main Street in Fort Bragg\, long after other techniques of printing had supposedly abandoned hand-set lead type reproduction to the Dark Ages. But no\, she kept printing that way and kept finding troves of musty old type in people’s defunct hobby shops and sheds.\nI walk in and the smell of old just hits me in the face.\nIt’s that type I bought down south\, wooden cabinets\nfull of dusty gray metal.\nThese two hot\, wet days\, muggy\, stifling\,\nswelled the rollers on the C&P\na full quarter inch\,\nAnd brought up the grotesque\, fetid\,\nOaky smell of dead type in mouse-turd cases.\nThey used to say that a font of ATF type\nwas good for the life of the printer—\nThis life is likely its second or third.\nDespite their funk\, I feel compassion for the lonely elders\nWho expended their one-time sheen\non uncountable impressions.\nThose letters were left alone too long in that grampa’s\nQuonset hut\, before the driver leaned\nup against my door jamb with his\,\n“I gotta pickup loada type out here for ya.”\nLet us join together now\nIn a rite of artificial resuscitation:\nLet us raise those moribund figures from their little coffins\,\nOne piece by one with our fingertips\,\nPlace the musty relics lovingly\nBeside the living ones\,\nAnd use them again\, ink them up\,\nPut our fingers up against them\,\nClick them into place syllabically\,\nNesting them against their long-lost brothers\,\nPress them chummily against the dampened stock\nIn an alphabetic composition once again\nWith meaning.

SUMMARY:Jake Spertus\, Point Arena Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz - hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, January 16\, at 7pm The Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Berkeley\, California poet Jake Spertus.\n \nThe reading will take place at Think Visual Gallery\, located at 240 Main Street in Point Arena. Doors open at 7pm\, event begins at 7:15pm. Bring something to sit on\, something to eat and/or drink (if you want!)\, your words\, music and ears!! The reading will begin with live improv jazz\, followed by a featured reading with the musicians accompanying Spertus\, then an open mic with jazz improv\, and finally the reading will conclude with more live improv jazz. \nJake Spertus was born in Seattle in 1993. They grew up between Kansas City and a small sheep farm in Northwest Missouri\, where they would disappear into the woods at chore-time. In 2011\, they left Missouri for the pines and broken shore of Maine\, where they went to college for math. After graduating\, they pent themself up for a while in Boston working in healthcare policy research. In 2018 they escaped to California to begin a PhD in statistics at UC Berkeley. \nThat same year they began writing poetry as solace for a grim political present\, a balm for homesickness\, and a counterweight to the rationalism and rigid structure that characterized their graduate studies. They wrote for 4 years before releasing the chapbook. Millenarianism in the Spring of 2023. This past fall\, they were a resident artist at the Winslow House Project in Vallejo\, focusing on poetry and visual art. They have read at Medicine for Nightmares in San Francisco\, at the release of Millenarianism in Berkeley\, and at the Winslow House in Vallejo. \nJake’s poetry is concerned with mystery and knowledge\, relationships between people and with land\, the subtle hauntings of power and violence\, and the presence of voids great and small. Their poems are informed by their upbringing in Missouri\, as much as by their persistent wandering. The poems often express both a hunger for the imagined coziness of Home–both metaphorical and literal–and a suspicion towards the moral and existential perils of settlement. The poems are interested in how different forms of abstraction–words\, numbers\, images\, data–contribute to our experiences and to the construction of our ideologies. They are particularly attentive to how sound\, form\, and imagery shape the feeling or meaning of verse. \nThird Thursday Poetry & Jazz is supported by The Third Thursday Poetry Group\, anonymous supporters\, and Poets & Writers\, Inc. \nOctober Drizzle \nA sudden drizzle beads the leaves\,\nAnd October\nRises off to atmosphere. \nYou call this “Autumn”?\nI hardly care. Lewis is a longtime workshop leader with California Poets in the Schools. She’s interested in spaces between here and there. Where ocean touches earth. Where mountains reach sky. Where “impossible” becomes “maybe” and where the blank page turns to art. Her work appears in anthologies and journals including Literary Mama\, Minerva Rising\, Iron Horse\, 7×7.la and in magazines for youth.
