DESCRIPTION:Lake County Poet Laureate Georgina Marie Guardado will be reading in Willits on Saturday\, August 12\, at the Willits Community Theatre.  An open reading will follow Guardado’s reading. The event will begin at 7:30 P.M. \nGeorgina Marie Guardado is a very dynamic poet and is deeply involved in the literary life of Lake County and parts beyond\, including Mendocino County.  Asked to write a thumbnail sketch of herself\, Guardado wrote\, “I am a writer\, poet and the Poet Laureate of Lake County\, from 2020 to 2024. I am the first Mexican-American and the youngest to serve in this role. I am also of Mojave descent. \n“My work in poetry is very much of the self\, of grief\, of generational trauma\, of longing\, and of nature. I aim to bring diversity\, inclusivity\, and inspiration to my local literary community.” \nEntry into this poetry reading is by donation but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. The Willits Community Theatre Playhouse is located at 37 West Van Lane\, a block west of Mazahar Clothing Store and a block south of Pizza To Go. \n  \n

How can we utilize creative writing as a vehicle for expressing gratitude and beauty while observing our world and honoring emotions? How can we do all of this using craft elements and literary devices so we don’t cross over into sentimentality? In this workshop\, we will explore how we can nurture our writing lives even in chaotic circumstances. Related topics will include supporting each other through writing communities\, self-doubt\, caring for ourselves as creatives\, and writerly expectations. A presentation will be offered followed by a Q&A\, group discussion\, and generative writing session with optional sharing. \nGeorgina Marie Guardado is the Poet Laureate of Lake County\, CA for 2020-2024\, and a Poets Laureate Fellow with The Academy of American Poets. She is the Literary Editor for The Bloom\, a contributing writer for Antioch University’s Common Thread News\, President of the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference\, and Literacy Program Coordinator for the Lake County Library. As part of the Broken Nose Collective\, an annual chapbook exchange\, she created her first poetry chapbook\, Finding the Roots of Water\, in 2018 and her second chapbook\, Tree Speak\, in 2019. She has received support from the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference\, Napa Valley Writers’ Conference\, Hugo House\, and SF Writing Salon. Her work has appeared in The Bloom\, Noyo Review\, Poets.org\, Humble Pie Magazine\, Gulf Coast Journal\, Yellow Medicine Review\, The Muleskinner Journal\, Colossus: Freedom\, and Two Hawks Quarterly. She is a 1st year graduate student and scholar of the Kwame Dawes Mapmakers and Master of Fine Arts Merit endowments at the Pacific University MFA in Writing program. DESCRIPTION:Willits poet Daniel Essman is the featured poet at a poetry reading to be held at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse on Saturday October 14. \nThe reading begins at 7:30 P.M. and entry is by donation. An open reading will follow Essman’s reading. \nDaniel Essman had his first featured reading in 1973. He is a California poet who for several decades joined his wife Robin Rule to co-host the Car Lords Poetry Series in Willits and on the Coast. He also has gained a following as the film reviewer for the Noyo Theatre\, as well as for his signature statement\, “He likes his reality attenuated by the wisdom of the imagination.” To wit\, his poems are from his own imagination and hence are the honest relics of his Senses. \nEntry into this poetry reading is by donation but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. The Willits Community Theatre Playhouse is located at 37 West Van Lane\, a block west of Mazahar Clothing Store and a block south of Pizza To Go.

DESCRIPTION:Previously scheduled for 2/23/23\, this event had to be postponed due to the severity of the winter snowstorms in the Ukiah area at that time. \nFor this October event\, a pop-up exhibit of the Heavy Lifting artists’ book will be on display in the Grace Hudson Museum Community Room from Thursday\, October 26 through Sunday\, November 5\, 2023; for museum hours\, see: https://www.gracehudsonmuseum.org/visit \nJoin Writers Read Ukiah in an event celebrating the publication of the limited-edition artists’ book\, Heavy Lifting\, the outcome of a collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. This is part of a series of events in a “listening tour” that will travel to six different population centers in Mendocino and Lake Counties over the spring of 2023 before moving on to other venues in northern California. \nThe evening will include presentation of a short experimental film\, a brief talk by Felicia\, a reading of poetry from the project by Theresa with an opportunity for the audience to respond to the themes and material. Theresa’s reading will be conducted in a round-robin format\, alternating poems from the book with poems or brief statements from the audience. \nThe artists’ book will be displayed along with a prototype of the companion book that includes the full manuscript of poems and documentation of the project. 10% of sales of the companion book will go to support humanitarian aid in Mendocino County. \nThe limited-edition artists’ book Heavy Lifting began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing which sparked a poem which led to a book structure\, then spiraled back round again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating megafire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global Pandemic and the threat of encroaching political totalitarianism. DESCRIPTION:POETRY ON THE RIVER HAS MORPHED INTO POETRY AT THE COBALT \nTHIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe Noyo Center for Marine Science can no longer offer space for the poetry series\, as the Slack Tide Cafe has now become the Noyo Center Marine Science Field Station and will be the site of research and education projects including growing red abalone\, setting up seaweed tumbleweed tanks\, and purple urchin ranching—a different kind of poetry! In any case\, we thank the Noyo Center for providing the space for the Poetry On The River readings\, as we move on to continue the poetry series at the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg. \nThe new reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, will be held the last Sunday of the month—however\, at a later time\, 5–7 pm.
