The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–7 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, September 8\, featured poets Maureen Eppstein and Zomala Abell will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15–20 minutes\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many readers show up!). SUMMARY:Armand Brint: Starlight Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Armand Brint is the featured reader at a poetry reading to be held on Saturday\, October 12\, at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse\, located at 37 West Van Lane\, in Willits. The reading will begin at 7 p.m. \nBrint is the author of seven collections of poetry and one volume on the art and craft of writing poems. Armand was the City of Ukiah’s first Poet Laureate. His poems have appeared in anthologies\, literary journals\, online publications and have been recorded for the radio.  His poems have also been set to music. Armand has taught poetry and creative writing at colleges\, universities and arts programs. He is also a founding member of the Ukiahaiku Festival and a recipient of a Jane Reichhold International Haiku Award. Armand’s latest collection\, “Songs for the Afterlife\,” has just been released by Secret Goldfish Press. \nWriting about his own work\, Brint wrote\, “Armand is a story teller; so his poems are typically narrative…with a twist. The twist is the use of extended metaphors that tend to reinforce the poem’s resonance and meaning. He often employs humor and playfulness as essential elements. And he strives to make the poems both personal and universal—that is to say\, relatable. Armand believes that a poem is not complete until it finds a reader. And to that end\, he stresses accessibility. His intent is always to welcome the reader into the poem. Armand’s poems are often based on quirky personal experiences and interactions\, and are often set in Mendocino County.” \nAn open reading will follow the featured reader. Entry by donation; suggested donation $10. However\, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, October 13\, featured poets (TBA) will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The former Poet Laureate of Ukiah has presented her work at various venues across the western United States and has been both a featured reader and workshop presenter at the Redwood Coast Writers Conference\, the Watershed Project\, The Conference of American Indians; Humboldt State University\, and Santa Rosa Junior College to name a few. Her work has been published in a variety of magazines\, journals and anthologies including The Dirt is Red Here\, by Heyday Books. She was included in the “Sing Me Your Story\, Dance Me Home: Art and Poetry from Native California” exhibit based on the Heyday book and coordinated by the California Exhibition Resources Alliance. He has been a poet teacher with California Poets in the Schools since 1998\, and teaches poetry at Mendocino Co\, Juvenile Hall. \nAs a bilingual poet\, he writes in English and Spanish\, and he has toured Spain and Cuba with a contingency of Bay Area poets. He has also been widely featured around Mendocino County\, Berkeley\, San Francisco\, L.A. and Vancouver B.C. \nHe is a single dad\, but his sons now have wives and children of their own\, so now he is the grandfather of five! He is an avid water person and he sails San Francisco Bay and swims with pinnapeds wherever and whenever they pop up to say hi. He wants listeners to know that he has a deep connection to the south coast of Mendocino as his great-great grandparents\, John and Carrie Johnson arrived in Pt. (https://bmoreyou.net/jabez-churchill-on-cartwheels-on-the-sky/) \nThe Final Measure\nI have not seen\nnor can I guess how it unfurls\,\nburnt offerings\,\nall that remain of last year’s leaves\,\nwhite flags\nsplayed across a bright and empty sky.\nPerhaps in rests\,\nthe widening interval between notes\,\nbetween breaths\,\ntick and tock of a dying clock\nuntil it stops.\nPerhaps in troughs\nlengthening between crests\nuntil they flatly mirror the reddened sun.\nI cannot\nupon these wax and feathered wings\,\ninheritance of my fathers\,\nfly unto the morrow\,\nwhat is yet\nor not to come:\nfire and ice\,\nperhaps another bloom.\nNor can my eyes\,\nhowever vigilant\,\nshortsighted\,\nsee beyond the shadows\nto what undoubtedly awaits\,\nthe final measure\nof yet another fleeting race\nin geologic time.\nI can only mark the end\,\nbeginning of each day.\nRejoice!\nmarveling by night\nat what is bravely written in the stars.
