SUMMARY:Steve Trenam Point Arena Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz - hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, January 19\, at 7pm The Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Petaluma Poet Steve Trenam. The reading will take place at Shindig (as well as virtually via Zoom)\, an emerging new tea and wine salon located on Verdant View off Annapolis Road at the Ranch Center in The Sea Ranch. The reading will begin with live improv jazz\, followed by a featured reading with Steve Trenam\, then an open mic with jazz improv\, and finally the reading will conclude with more live improv jazz. \nSteve is a Santa Rosa Junior College Instructor of poetry writing in their Older Adults Program. He is also a founding member of Poetic License Sonoma which collaborates with the Sebastopol Center for the Arts in conducting poetry readings on the fourth Tuesday of each month\, featuring such headliners as Prartho Sereno\, Maya Khosla\, Elizabeth Herron\, and Megan Merchant. Steve was the recipient of a Randolph Newman grant which brought the 24th U. S. Poet Laureate\, Ada Limón\, to SRJC in November. \nSteve’s book of poetry\, An Affront to Gravity\, was published recently by Blue Light Press and can be ordered through your local bookstore or Amazon. Some of his poetry and ceramic art can be found in an ekphrastic poetry book\, Canyon\, River\, Stone and Light\, and Pandemic Puzzle Poems\, both published by Blue Light Press\, 2021. Other poems appear in Crossroads\, the Redwood Writers poetry anthology\, May 2022; Jerry Jazz Musician: A Collection of Jazz Poetry—Fall/Winter\, 2022-23 Edition; and Poem for the Day with Larry Robinson\, in multiple publications online. \nSteve Trenam’s mother owned a bookstore from 1962 to 1985 in Petaluma\, California. It was called Alta’s Old Book Shop\, and its value lay not in glossy modernity\, but in being a dusty delivery room for the birth of ideas. It was for Steve\, a source for answers and insights which enlarged his personal life and gave it meaning.  It also generated the impulse to write. \nAs far as his poetry is concerned\, Steve feels neither sure-footed nor clear. Metaphorically speaking\, he is out on a leafless limb with just spider webs and moss\, listening to the silken slip of water over stone. \nMore information about Steve’s work is available at https://www.sebarts.org/literary-arts and https://poeticlicensesonoma.com/. \nShindig is located next door to Birdsong Clinic & Tea Shop (directions at birdsongclinic.com)\, and more information on Shindig can be gathered by emailing shindig.searanch@gmail.com.  Third Thursday Poetry is supported by The Third Thursday Poetry Group\, many anonymous donors\, and Poets & Writers\, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation. \nTo receive an invitation to the Zoom reading\, or for more information\, contact Blake More (info below).

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Felicia Rice & Theresa Whitehill: Heavy Lifting\, Writers Read Ukiah
DESCRIPTION:This event on 2/23/23 had to be postponed due to the severity of the winter snowstorms in the Ukiah area. This has been rescheduled to Thursday\, October 26\, 2023. See the listing for the October event: https://theresawhitehill.com/event/felicia-rice-theresa-whitehill-heavy-lifting-writers-read-ukiah/ \nJoin Writers Read Ukiah in an event celebrating the publication of the limited-edition artists’ book\, Heavy Lifting\, the outcome of a collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. This is the first of a series of events as part of a “listening tour” that will travel to six different population centers in Mendocino and Lake Counties over the spring of 2023 before moving on to other venues in northern California. \nThe evening will include presentation of a short experimental film\, a brief talk by Felicia\, a reading of poetry from the project by Theresa with an opportunity for the audience to respond to the themes and material. Theresa’s reading will be conducted in a round-robin format\, alternating poems from the book with poems or brief statements from the audience. \nThe artists’ book will be displayed along with a prototype of the companion book that includes the full manuscript of poems and documentation of the project. 10% of sales of the companion book will go to support humanitarian aid in Mendocino County. \nThe limited-edition artists’ book Heavy Lifting began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing which sparked a poem which led to a book structure\, then spiraled back round again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating megafire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global Pandemic and the threat of encroaching political totalitarianism. This project tackles these individual and public crises and has become our search for ways in which to share our experiences from the past several years in book form\, performance\, and dialogue\, leading to thinking collaboratively about our shared future. \nFor more information\, and for those who want to explore the themes of the project so they can choose related pieces for the open mic session\, see: https://movingpartspress.com/publications/heavy-lifting/ \nTo see the full lineup of events for the Heavy Listening Tour\, see: https://movingpartspress.com/publications/heavy-lifting-listening-tour/ \nWe continue to strongly recommend that you do not attend unless fully vaccinated. Masking while indoors is also recommended.\nSuggested donation: $5\, Refreshments provided.\nFor Information\, contact Writers Read Ukiah MC Michael Riedell\, innisfreeriedell@gmail.com \nWriters Read happens on the last Thursday of almost every month and has been happening in Ukiah since 1999.
