SUMMARY:Theresa Whitehill\, Divan del Tamarit\, publication event
DESCRIPTION:The Real Lead Saloon: \nTheresa Whitehill Event \nJoin us at The CODEX Foundation Logan Book Arts Center for a poetry reading by Theresa Whitehill celebrating the newest Real Lead Saloon publication of her book Divan del Tamarit. Come enjoy the current exhibition and learn more about the Real Lead Saloon and the handmade publications they produce in the studios of The CODEX Foundation. \nFriday\, March 13\, 2026\, 5:00 pm\nThe CODEX Foundation\nLogan Book Arts Center\n1331 Seventh Street\, Unit D\nBerkeley\, CA 94710 \nThis event will be free and open to the public. No RSVP required\, though seating may be limited. \nA California-born poet and letterpress artist\, Theresa Whitehill has been a resident of Mendocino County for over forty years. Whitehill’s interrelated focus on literary and book arts came out of her studies with poet William Everson at UC Santa Cruz in the late 1970s and at Mills College in the Book Art program in the early 1980s. \nHer poetry and letterpress broadsides are in many fine press collections\, including the Getty Center for the Arts\, the John Hay Library of Brown University\, the British Museum\, the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley\, and the San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and New York Public Libraries. In 2024\, she completed an 18-month tour of Heavy Lifting\, her most ambitious project to date\, a collaboration with Mendocino book artist\, Felicia Rice\, resulting in an artists’ book\, a film\, and a collection of poetry based on the personal and collective crises of recent years.

SUMMARY:Melissa Eleftherion Carr: Suture
DESCRIPTION:A Book Launch event for Suture\, by Melissa Eleftherion\nSaturday\, April 25\n6–8 pm\nMedium Art Center\nUkiah\, CA 95482\nThe event will include an open mic for the audience to share their own work \nFrom Melissa Eleftherion: How can we protect the most imperiled among us? Suture is a collection of erasures of Flowers in the Attic & other books by V.C. Andrews\, that works to excavate stuck traumas & shame to reclaim a narrative. The work aims to open a channel for the oppressed voice in the sub- & inter-textual space to sing and be heard. To be listened to in all their vulnerable musics without need of armor or shells. The voice is soft and aims to stay that way\, despite all lived experiences to the contrary.

SUMMARY:2026 ukiaHaiku Festival
DESCRIPTION:As we enter the New Year\, we hope you might find time to enter the 24th ukiaHaiku Festival contest. Residents of Mendocino\, Lake\, Sonoma\, and Humboldt counties\, from kindergarten age through adult\, can enter haiku in ten different categories (two for Spanish). There is also one category open to planet Earth\, the Jane Reichhold International Award. Writing haiku\, one of the simplest and most accessible forms of poetry\, gives you a chance to capture and reflect upon being present in a special moment of experience. \n\nThere will be a celebration of winning haiku on April 26th\, 2026 at the Civic Center Council Chambers where we invite winners to attend and read their haiku. Winners will receive awards\, including gift certificates to local bookstores. We will also produce a publication of the winning haiku. \n\n\nIn recognition that the Pomo People are the original inhabitants of Mendocino County and that the name Ukiah itself is from a Pomo language\, this year\, we are making an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku that are in Pomo languages or express a Pomo perspective. (These can be written in English\, Spanish and Pomo Languages\, with English translations.) \n\n\nHaiku submissions can be made on our website: www.ukiahaiku.org \n\n\nThe website also has information on writing haiku including advice from the late Jane Reichhold (a haiku scholar)\, in her videoed lesson for local teachers (see “resources” at the bottom of the website page). These resources are intended to help show what our judges are looking for in a haiku. \n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Colter Jacobsen at Ukiahaikufestival@gmail.com or 415-832-0978. \nIf you prefer to submit haiku via snail mail\, there are entry forms at the Mendocino County Library in Ukiah. Or you can print a pdf from our website and send it to: \n\n\nukiaHaiku Festival\nMendocino County Library\n105 N Main St\nUkiah\, CA 95482 \n\n\nBoth online and snail mail submissions must be postmarked by February 7th. \n\n\nVisit the website for more information and to read more winning haiku from previous festivals. \nI hope you will participate with entries and come join the celebration! \n\n\nSincerely\,\nMelissa Eleftherion Carr\nUkiah Poet Laureate Emeritus 2021-2023 \n\n\nThe ukiaHaiku Festival Youth Outreach was awarded a grant by the California Humanities\, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities and sponsored by North Coast Opportunities. \n\ninstagram: @ukiahaikufestival
