DESCRIPTION:Join the Digitization and Special Collections Department and the LA Public Library for a talk and reading by Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill\, a screening of the short film On Heavy Lifting\, and audience questions. The limited edition book Heavy Lifting\, a recent addition to the Book Arts Collection\, is the work of a multi-year project by our guests\, Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill. The program is part of the year-long series of events at the Library Looking at Art – The Book\, celebrating artists’ books. \nHeavy Lifting is the outcome of a close collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. It began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing\, which sparked a poem\, which led to a book structure\, and then spiraled back around again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating mega-fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global pandemic and threat of political totalitarianism. Heavy Lifting took flight despite and because of our personal and collective crises of this terrible time and tackles these issues in book form\, performance\, and dialogue in search of a tenable future. \nThis will be a Zoom presentation which will stream live on the Library’s YouTube channel. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 9th at 2 pm\, Felicia Rice’s Currents exhibit will host a poetry reading featuring Mendocino Coast Writers Conference Short Fiction Award winner Phannarai Inkun. \nCurrents Exhibit Dates: Saturday\, June 8 to Sunday\, June 9\, 2024\nExhibit Hours: 11 to 4 pm \nThere is also a reception for the exhibit on Saturday\, June 8 from 5–8 pm as part of Second Saturday in Mendocino. \nStatement from artist Felicia Rice on the exhibit:\nMy parents were active members of a vibrant arts community here in Mendocino when I was a summer kid going to their classes at the Mendocino Arts Center. I graduated from Mendocino High in the early 70s as the area was flooding with young people eager to build a new vibrant community. I have returned to town after 50 years to discover that the arts have taken a backseat to commerce. I miss seeing the arts celebrated all over town\, in every nook and cranny\, particularly on Main Street. So I thought I’d scratch that itch of mine.

DESCRIPTION:As the New Year approaches\, we hope you might find time to enter the 22nd ukiaHaiku Festival contest. Residents of Mendocino\, Lake\, Sonoma\, and Humboldt counties\, from kindergarten age through adult\, can enter haiku in ten different categories (two for Spanish). There is also one category open to planet Earth\, the Jane Reichhold International Award. Writing haiku\, one of the simplest and most accessible forms of poetry\, gives you a chance to capture and reflect upon being present in a special moment of experience. \n\nThere will be a celebration of winning haiku on April 28th\, 2024 at the Civic Center Council Chambers where we invite winners to attend and read their haiku. Winners will receive awards\, including gift certificates to local bookstores. We will also produce a publication of the winning haiku. \n\n\nIn recognition that the Pomo People are the original inhabitants of Mendocino County and that the name Ukiah itself is from a Pomo language\, this year\, we are making an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku that are in Pomo languages or express a Pomo perspective. (These can be written in English\, Spanish and Pomo Languages\, with English translations.) \n\n\nHaiku submissions can be made on our website: www.ukiahaiku.org \n\n\nThe website also has information on writing haiku including advice from the late Jane Reichhold (a haiku scholar)\, in her videoed lesson for local teachers (see “resources” at the bottom of the website page). SUMMARY:Felicia Rice & Theresa Whitehill: Heavy Lifting at the M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Heavy Lifting will be part of the exhibit Selections: Rydell Visual Arts Fellows 2006-2021 at the M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from Saturday\, January 27\, 2024 through Sunday\, March 24\, 2024. The curators of the exhibit are Melissa Kreisa and Rose Sellery. This exhibit is in partnership with Community Foundation Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour will be coming to Santa Cruz during this exhibition. The tour will come to the Institute of the Arts & Sciences (IAS)\, University of California at Santa Cruz on Sunday\, March 3 at 3 pm. For venue information\, contact ias@ucsc.edu. \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal.
