DESCRIPTION:The Heavy Lifting Listening Tour is coming to the Institute of the Arts & Sciences (IAS)\, University of California at Santa Cruz on Sunday\, March 3 at 3 pm. For venue information\, contact ias@ucsc.edu. \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. The deadline for nominations is February 29th. Nominees will need to submit applications in March and be interviewed in April. This is an official honorary position in which the Poet Laureate will serve for a term of 2 years. The Poet Laureate would be expected to appear at some public functions\, and hopefully engage with not only the poetry community but the broader literary\, Arts\, political\, and educational communities. How the Poet Laureate will do this will be defined by that person’s own creative process. For more information on how to apply or nominate for this position go to http://mendocinopoetlaureate.mymcn.org. SUMMARY:2024 ukiaHaiku Festival - Submission Deadline
DESCRIPTION:As the New Year approaches\, we hope you might find time to enter the 22nd ukiaHaiku Festival contest. Residents of Mendocino\, Lake\, Sonoma\, and Humboldt counties\, from kindergarten age through adult\, can enter haiku in ten different categories (two for Spanish). There is also one category open to planet Earth\, the Jane Reichhold International Award. Writing haiku\, one of the simplest and most accessible forms of poetry\, gives you a chance to capture and reflect upon being present in a special moment of experience. \n\nThere will be a celebration of winning haiku on April 28th\, 2024 at the Civic Center Council Chambers where we invite winners to attend and read their haiku. Winners will receive awards\, including gift certificates to local bookstores. We will also produce a publication of the winning haiku. \n\n\nIn recognition that the Pomo People are the original inhabitants of Mendocino County and that the name Ukiah itself is from a Pomo language\, this year\, we are making an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku that are in Pomo languages or express a Pomo perspective. (These can be written in English\, Spanish and Pomo Languages\, with English translations.) \n\n\nHaiku submissions can be made on our website: www.ukiahaiku.org \n\n\nThe website also has information on writing haiku including advice from the late Jane Reichhold (a haiku scholar)\, in her videoed lesson for local teachers (see “resources” at the bottom of the website page). DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. SUMMARY:Seventh Cascadian Poetry Festival: Bioregional Typography
DESCRIPTION:Clearcutting of languages and cultures has been widespread in Cascadia\, just like the clearcutting of forests. Even so\, this remains a rich and highly varied landscape\, geologically\, biologically\, and linguistically. Cascadian Zen: Bioregional Writings on Cascadia Here and Now is an anthology of pieces written and spoken in English\, but many languages and writing systems are present in the text – mostly as placenames\, personal names\, references\, and quotations. This will be a discussion between two poet/typographers: Theresa Whitehill (who designed the anthology) and Robert Bringhurst. It will start with some of the interesting problems that cropped up in setting volume 1 of the anthology and proceed to the wider context of polylingual typography in Cascadia in general. \nThe date for this talk is Saturday\, October 7\, 2023 1 PM; the venue will be announced and registrants will receive that information before the event. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Voices Series \nGeorgina Marie Guardado is Poet Laureate of Lake County\, CA for 2020-2024\, the first Mexican American to serve in this role\, and she also has Mojave descent. The Academy of American Poets awarded her a Poets Laureate Fellow. She is the literary editor for The Bloom\, a contributing writer for Antioch University’s Common Thread News\, president of the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference\, and Literacy Program Coordinator for the Lake County Library. As part of the Broken Nose Collective\, an annual chapbook exchange\, she created her first poetry chapbooks\, Finding the Roots of Water and Tree Speak. \nLinda Noel is a California native of the Koyongkawi Maidu (Konkow) people from the northern Sierra. She has a chapbook titled\, “Where You First Saw the Eyes of Coyote” and has been a published poet in a variety of anthologies and magazines. She is included in the Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry: When the Light of the World Was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through. She has a piece included in the permanent collection at the Autry Museum of the West and another has been adapted and performed by the Pasadena Choir; she has read her work throughout the country. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. SUMMARY:2023 Mendocino Spring Poetry Celebration Reading
DESCRIPTION:The guitar and vocals of David Partch greeted arrivals at the Hill House for the 18th consecutive revival of the Mendocino Spring Poetry Celebration. This was a return to in-person fellowship\, following three years of withdrawal to a radio-only platform due to the pandemic. \nArmand Brint\, Daniel Barth\, and Michael Riedell\, former Poets Laureate of Ukiah\, arrived from over the hill to lend their dignities. Michael Riedell announced moves toward a county-wide Poet Laureate program. \nMartin Hickel came from Marin and trundled food trays from harvest market for both sessions of the day’s performance marathon. Zia Cattalini tended the food table with elegance. \nBill Vartnaw came from Petaluma with his new book of work by the late great H. D. Moe\, formerly a regular supporter of the Celebration. The display table was stocked with work by attendees\, including copies of the May issue of Real Estate Magazine\, with articles on the history of this annual poetry event. \nDan Roberts\, as regular host of the two reading sessions\, is recovering from surgery\, so his office was fulfilled by a consortium of Michael Riedell\, Janferie Stone\, \, and Joe Smith. Nonetheless\, Dan is preparing recordings of the poetry for broadcast\, as usual\, beginning this Sunday June 18 at 3pm\, at kzyx.org on his show Rhythm Running River\, which alternates the poems with selections from world music. \nHere are the 42 poet contributors for 2023; Joe Smith\, Janferie Stone\, Bill Bradd\, Riantee\, Noemi\, Serafina\, Armand Brint\, Mother Bear Scott\, Notty Bumbo\, Mike Edwards\, Sean Casey\, Belvie Rooks\, Tina Ballantine\, David Partch\, Kirk Lumpkin\, Greg Randall\, Devreaux Baker\, Christopher Hills\, Cindy Frank\, Martin Hickel\, Michael Riedell\, Radek Toma\, Marty Durlin\, Bill Vartnaw\, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick- Vrenios\, Joe Bridgman\, Zida Borcich\, Maureen Eppstein\, Janice Marcell\, Mary Rose Kaczorowski\, Bill Craig\, Gordon Black\, Bill Bruneau\, Beth Spencer\, Tory Quintero\, Scott Croghan\, Dan Barth\, Jamie Armstrong\, Zia Cattalini\, Daniel Hess\, Zen Way\, Virginia Sharkey. \nThanks to Zida Borcich for dedicating the cultural banquette of the May issue of REM\, the Real Estate Magazine\, for poems. and articles about poetry\, and the history of the Mendocino Spring Poetry Celebration. DESCRIPTION:The Heavy Lifting Listening Tour is coming to the Coast Community Library Community Room in Point Arena on Saturday\, April 15 at 2 pm\, with guest Sidney Regelbrugge\, Mendocino County Youth Poet Laureate. \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book.
