The exhibit runs from Friday\, August 4 through Tuesday\, August 29. The Heavy Lifting Listening Tour event will take place on Saturday\, August 5 from 10 am–12 pm. To contact the venue\, email pacifictextilearts@mcn.org. \nThis exhibition is part of the Heavy Lifting Listening Tour. The tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. SUMMARY:2023 Mendocino Spring Poetry Celebration Reading
DESCRIPTION:The guitar and vocals of David Partch greeted arrivals at the Hill House for the 18th consecutive revival of the Mendocino Spring Poetry Celebration. This was a return to in-person fellowship\, following three years of withdrawal to a radio-only platform due to the pandemic. \nArmand Brint\, Daniel Barth\, and Michael Riedell\, former Poets Laureate of Ukiah\, arrived from over the hill to lend their dignities. Michael Riedell announced moves toward a county-wide Poet Laureate program. \nMartin Hickel came from Marin and trundled food trays from harvest market for both sessions of the day’s performance marathon. Zia Cattalini tended the food table with elegance. \nBill Vartnaw came from Petaluma with his new book of work by the late great H. D. Moe\, formerly a regular supporter of the Celebration. The display table was stocked with work by attendees\, including copies of the May issue of Real Estate Magazine\, with articles on the history of this annual poetry event. \nDan Roberts\, as regular host of the two reading sessions\, is recovering from surgery\, so his office was fulfilled by a consortium of Michael Riedell\, Janferie Stone\, \, and Joe Smith. Nonetheless\, Dan is preparing recordings of the poetry for broadcast\, as usual\, beginning this Sunday June 18 at 3pm\, at kzyx.org on his show Rhythm Running River\, which alternates the poems with selections from world music. \nHere are the 42 poet contributors for 2023; Joe Smith\, Janferie Stone\, Bill Bradd\, Riantee\, Noemi\, Serafina\, Armand Brint\, Mother Bear Scott\, Notty Bumbo\, Mike Edwards\, Sean Casey\, Belvie Rooks\, Tina Ballantine\, David Partch\, Kirk Lumpkin\, Greg Randall\, Devreaux Baker\, Christopher Hills\, Cindy Frank\, Martin Hickel\, Michael Riedell\, Radek Toma\, Marty Durlin\, Bill Vartnaw\, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick- Vrenios\, Joe Bridgman\, Zida Borcich\, Maureen Eppstein\, Janice Marcell\, Mary Rose Kaczorowski\, Bill Craig\, Gordon Black\, Bill Bruneau\, Beth Spencer\, Tory Quintero\, Scott Croghan\, Dan Barth\, Jamie Armstrong\, Zia Cattalini\, Daniel Hess\, Zen Way\, Virginia Sharkey. \nThanks to Zida Borcich for dedicating the cultural banquette of the May issue of REM\, the Real Estate Magazine\, for poems. and articles about poetry\, and the history of the Mendocino Spring Poetry Celebration. DESCRIPTION:Tune into KZYX&Z’s Be More Now program at 7pm on Thursday\, April 6 when host Blake More interviews artist/printer Felicia Rice\, poet Theresa Whitehill and poet Sidney Regelbrugge\, the Mendocino County Youth Poet Laureate. \nHeavy Lifting\, the outcome of a 3 1/2 year collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill is part event\, part film\, part exhibition and part reading\, and it is currently touring Mendocino County and beyond. Our discussion will center upon how this project presents an opportunity for dialogue and healing in an historic time of crisis and renewal. \nHeavy Lifting is a fierce work that names the darkness in the belief that the first stage of recovery from grief is acknowledgement\, and that the precursor to action can be anger. It is a response to a call sounded by artist/educator Paul Soulellis in 2021: “Publishing has always been political\, but has it ever felt as urgent as it does right now in the global distress and intersecting crises of the past year? There’s a desperate need for new language to express publishing’s renewed urgency and importance. …let’s turn away from old\, legacy publishing models towards something new: an ethics\, craft\, and politics of urgent making.” \nThe limited edition artists’ book\, Heavy Lifting\, is the outcome of a close collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. It began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing which sparked a poem which led to a book structure\, then spiraled back round again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating megafire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global pandemic and threat of political totalitarianism. Heavy Lifting took flight in spite of and because of our personal and collective crises of this terrible time and tackles these issues in book form\, performance\, and dialogue in search of a tenable future. The innovative book structure of nested accordion-fold panels features stunning poems by Theresa Whitehill in compelling conversation with prints by Felicia Rice. Inge Bruggeman writes in the preface to The Heavy Lifting Companion\, “Felicia Rice has … an unsurpassed commitment to the book as a unique space for expressing artistic content…. Heavy Lifting not only demonstrates Rice’s innovative use of the artists’ book format\, it reveals the unique power of this art form to unfurl within the hands of the individual\, thus beautifully connecting the individual’s role to art\, poetry\, and the world around them.” \nHeavy Lifting acknowledges the almost unbearable pace of relentless crises that have unfolded in recent years—covid\, climate change\, racial injustice\, the threat of totalitarianism\, immigration crises—and begins to dwell in what might lie beyond these times. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. DESCRIPTION:Paul Nelson of Cascadia Poetics Lab in Seattle\, Washington is delighted to present an interview about the art book Heavy Lifting\, a collaboration by Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and the poet Theresa Whitehill. Recorded Friday\, March 25\, 2023\, via Zoom\, this interview is about how the project came together\, what it means to create stunning works of art that are also books\, and how we engage the realities of the anthropocene. This is an incredibly important fact given that Felicia’s home and studio was totally destroyed by a wildfire that has become the new normal in the California summer. Theresa Whitehill’s poetry works seamlessly with Felicia’s design in a book that is like few others every created. For book nerds\, this is nirvana and we get inside of the whole project via the video version of this Cascadian Prophets interview.

An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. SUMMARY:Deadline for Registration: Poetry Postcard Fest (PoPo) 2022
DESCRIPTION:Poetry Postcard Fest 2022 \nPoetry Postcard Fest\, or PoPo for short\, is an international annual literary event produced by Cascadia Poetics Lab out of Seattle\, in which people sign up to send 31 original poems on postcards to folks on a participation list before the end of August (31 poems because originally it was set up to send a poem/postcard a day for the month of August; it has since expanded to allow sending of poetry postcards anytime after receiving a list of postcard recipients after registering. The Fest was initiated in 2007 by poets Paul Nelson and Lana Ayers\, and has grown to include poets participating worldwide. Registration deadline for 2022 is July 4. \nA little background as to why this is appearing on my poetry events calendar for Mendocino: Mendocino poet Theresa Whitehill has been involved with Cascadia Poetics Lab since 2019\, when Paul Nelson came to Mendocino County to interview Mary Norbert Korte for his American Prophets series. DESCRIPTION:Haiku revival: \nFamed fest returns for retrospection and renewal \nby Roberta Werdinger \nIn 2002\, a group of poets and poetry lovers in Ukiah\, noting that their city’s name was “haiku” spelled backwards\, decided to hold a festival. Starting with Armand Brint\, Ukiah’s first Poet Laureate\, as its guiding spirit\, the festival grew and flourished throughout the years\, becoming internationally known. Now the event returns\, in time for its 20-year anniversary\, in an in-person celebration on Sunday\, May 15\, from 2 to 4 p.m.\, in the Public Room and Wild Gardens at the Grace Hudson Museum. \nThe ukiaHaiku Festival was in quarantine the first year of the pandemic and appeared only in virtual form the year after\, but haiku itself and its many writers and fans emerged intact. As people picked themselves up and dusted themselves off from the strains and separations of the COVID-19 pandemic era\, this new form of the ukiaHaiku Fest was dreamed up. The organizers decided not to hold a contest this year\, but to treat the event as a retrospective celebration\, with former and current Poets Laureate reading their favorite selections from both adult and youth categories\, as well as adding one of their own. An open mic reading will follow\, with sign-ups starting at 2 p.m. (Children and young adults are invited to attend and read\, and bilingual haiku is welcome.) Shakuhachi flute\, an ancient Japanese musical form\, will be performed by Ron Nadeau. Entertainment from SPACE\, Higher Ground\, and the Haikuleles (AKA the Uke Tones) will be provided. An arts & crafts booth\, a special presentation by award-winning haiku poet and artist Annette Makino\, and energetic MCing from former Poet Laureate Michael Riedell completes the picture. \nThe late and much-loved Susan Sparrow\, a key organizer of earlier UkiaHaiku Fests and other local literary events\, saw the festival as “uniquely Ukiahan.” Brint\, also an award-winning haiku poet\, comments: “In many ways\, this 20th anniversary celebration is a tribute to internationally acclaimed haiku author and Mendocino Coast resident Jane Reichhold (1937-2016). Jane served as an unofficial mentor to the festival\, and also judged the International category of haiku submissions. It’s thanks to Jane that local organizers\, judges and many participants learned the finer points of haiku.” \nA haiku is a three-line poem that captures a fleeting moment and a quiet impression which can often go unremarked on in our busy lives. The poems resemble little word blossoms\, compact and bursting with life. Originating in Japan\, haiku draw attention to the passing seasons and to everyday human encounters without comment or embellishment. “Think of it as a mental snapshot\, as seeing the haiku moment in your mind\,” Dan Barth\, another former Poet Laureate of Ukiah\, explains.
