An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–7 pm. SUMMARY:Armand Brint: Starlight Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Armand Brint is the featured reader at a poetry reading to be held on Saturday\, October 12\, at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse\, located at 37 West Van Lane\, in Willits. The reading will begin at 7 p.m. \nBrint is the author of seven collections of poetry and one volume on the art and craft of writing poems. Armand was the City of Ukiah’s first Poet Laureate. His poems have appeared in anthologies\, literary journals\, online publications and have been recorded for the radio.  His poems have also been set to music. Armand has taught poetry and creative writing at colleges\, universities and arts programs. He is also a founding member of the Ukiahaiku Festival and a recipient of a Jane Reichhold International Haiku Award. Armand’s latest collection\, “Songs for the Afterlife\,” has just been released by Secret Goldfish Press. \nWriting about his own work\, Brint wrote\, “Armand is a story teller; so his poems are typically narrative…with a twist. The twist is the use of extended metaphors that tend to reinforce the poem’s resonance and meaning. He often employs humor and playfulness as essential elements. And he strives to make the poems both personal and universal—that is to say\, relatable. Armand believes that a poem is not complete until it finds a reader. And to that end\, he stresses accessibility. His intent is always to welcome the reader into the poem. Armand’s poems are often based on quirky personal experiences and interactions\, and are often set in Mendocino County.” \nAn open reading will follow the featured reader. Entry by donation; suggested donation $10. However\, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Digitization and Special Collections Department and the LA Public Library for a talk and reading by Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill\, a screening of the short film On Heavy Lifting\, and audience questions. The limited edition book Heavy Lifting\, a recent addition to the Book Arts Collection\, is the work of a multi-year project by our guests\, Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill. The program is part of the year-long series of events at the Library Looking at Art – The Book\, celebrating artists’ books. \nHeavy Lifting is the outcome of a close collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. It began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing\, which sparked a poem\, which led to a book structure\, and then spiraled back around again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating mega-fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global pandemic and threat of political totalitarianism. Heavy Lifting took flight despite and because of our personal and collective crises of this terrible time and tackles these issues in book form\, performance\, and dialogue in search of a tenable future. \nThis will be a Zoom presentation which will stream live on the Library’s YouTube channel. SUMMARY:Debby Charlene Segal Point Arena Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz - hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, August 15\, at 7pm The Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Debby Charlene Segal.\n \nThe reading will take place at Think Visual Gallery (as well as virtually via Zoom)\, located at 240 Main Street in Point Arena. Doors open at 7pm\, event begins at 7:15pm. BYOE (everything including a chair!). The reading will begin with live improv jazz\, followed by a featured reading\, then an open mic with jazz improv\, and finally the reading will conclude with more live improv jazz.
