DESCRIPTION:Join the Digitization and Special Collections Department and the LA Public Library for a talk and reading by Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill\, a screening of the short film On Heavy Lifting\, and audience questions. The limited edition book Heavy Lifting\, a recent addition to the Book Arts Collection\, is the work of a multi-year project by our guests\, Felicia Rice and Theresa Whitehill. The program is part of the year-long series of events at the Library Looking at Art – The Book\, celebrating artists’ books. \nHeavy Lifting is the outcome of a close collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. It began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing\, which sparked a poem\, which led to a book structure\, and then spiraled back around again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating mega-fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global pandemic and threat of political totalitarianism. Heavy Lifting took flight despite and because of our personal and collective crises of this terrible time and tackles these issues in book form\, performance\, and dialogue in search of a tenable future. \nThis will be a Zoom presentation which will stream live on the Library’s YouTube channel. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–7 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, September 8\, featured poets Maureen Eppstein and Zomala Abell will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–7 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, August 11\, featuring a tribute to the late Peter Nash to include readings from his works\, followed by open mic readings. DESCRIPTION:THIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, formerly Poetry On The River\, has relocated to the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg\, thanks to Button Quinn\, artist and gallery owner who has graciously made the space available to us. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–7 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, July 14\, featured poets Kate Dougherty and C Rowan Hawthorn will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15–20 minutes\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many readers show up!). Please get this around far and wide\, as we’d like to reach all over Mendocino County and beyond. Any suggestions or ideas you have\, including other people to invite\, would be greatly appreciated.
