The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–8 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, June 9\, featured poets Louisa Aronow & Sondra Sula will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15–20 minutes\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many readers show up!). DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 9th at 2 pm\, Felicia Rice’s Currents exhibit will host a poetry reading featuring Mendocino Coast Writers Conference Short Fiction Award winner Phannarai Inkun. \nCurrents Exhibit Dates: Saturday\, June 8 to Sunday\, June 9\, 2024\nExhibit Hours: 11 to 4 pm \nThere is also a reception for the exhibit on Saturday\, June 8 from 5–8 pm as part of Second Saturday in Mendocino. \nStatement from artist Felicia Rice on the exhibit:\nMy parents were active members of a vibrant arts community here in Mendocino when I was a summer kid going to their classes at the Mendocino Arts Center. I graduated from Mendocino High in the early 70s as the area was flooding with young people eager to build a new vibrant community. I have returned to town after 50 years to discover that the arts have taken a backseat to commerce. I miss seeing the arts celebrated all over town\, in every nook and cranny\, particularly on Main Street. So I thought I’d scratch that itch of mine.

An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. SUMMARY:Starlight Lounge: Long Form Open Reading
DESCRIPTION:The Willits Community Theatre will host a “long form” open reading at the Playhouse on Saturday\, May 11. The reading will begin at 7 P.M. \nIn this reading\, the time limit will be pushed outward to 15 minutes. According to event coordinator Mike A’Dair\, that means that poets may read longer works. \n“A lot of times\, poets are forced by the shorter time constraints of most readings to read short poems or a number of short poems. This longer time limit will allow poets to read poems that they rarely are given an opportunity to read in public. I hope local poets will take advantage of this opportunity\,” A’Dair said. \nHe added that poets may read a large number of shorter poems if they wish to. \nEntry to this reading is by donation; however no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. This reading is sponsored by the Willits Community Theatre’s 2024 season underwriters NC Financial Group and The Sparetime Garden Center. The WCT Playhouse is located at 37 Van Lane in beautiful downtown Willits.

SUMMARY:2024 ukiaHaiku Festival
DESCRIPTION:As the New Year approaches\, we hope you might find time to enter the 22nd ukiaHaiku Festival contest. Residents of Mendocino\, Lake\, Sonoma\, and Humboldt counties\, from kindergarten age through adult\, can enter haiku in ten different categories (two for Spanish). There is also one category open to planet Earth\, the Jane Reichhold International Award. Writing haiku\, one of the simplest and most accessible forms of poetry\, gives you a chance to capture and reflect upon being present in a special moment of experience. \n\nThere will be a celebration of winning haiku on April 28th\, 2024 at the Civic Center Council Chambers where we invite winners to attend and read their haiku. Winners will receive awards\, including gift certificates to local bookstores. We will also produce a publication of the winning haiku. \n\n\nIn recognition that the Pomo People are the original inhabitants of Mendocino County and that the name Ukiah itself is from a Pomo language\, this year\, we are making an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku that are in Pomo languages or express a Pomo perspective. (These can be written in English\, Spanish and Pomo Languages\, with English translations.) \n\n\nHaiku submissions can be made on our website: www.ukiahaiku.org \n\n\nThe website also has information on writing haiku including advice from the late Jane Reichhold (a haiku scholar)\, in her videoed lesson for local teachers (see “resources” at the bottom of the website page). DESCRIPTION:Writers Read Ukiah last Thursday poetry series will meet on Thursday\, March 28\, at 7 PM at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. \nThe featured event will be readings from the anthology\, Dear Human at the Edge of Time: Poems on Climate Change in the United States. San Mateo County Poet Laureate Emerita\, Aileen Cassineto\, one of the book’s contributing poets\, will lead the presentation. \nOpen mic session will follow the featured reading. Poets are encouraged to choose work relating to climate change. Maximum time for each reader is six minutes.
