DESCRIPTION:The Heavy Lifting Listening Tour is coming to The White Barn in St. Helena on Sunday\, April 21 at 4 pm. For venue information\, contact info@thewhitebarn.org. \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. Former Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Sally Ashton is a poet\, writer\, teacher\, and editor-in-chief of DMQ Review\, an online journal featuring poetry and art. Publishing in three genres\, she is the author of five books of poems including the just-released “Listening to Mars” (Cornerstone Press\, 2024) and “The Behaviour of Clocks” (WordFarm\, 2019). She taught writing at San José State University for ten years and continues to teach workshops locally\, on Zoom\, and is currently teaching online through Hugo House. DESCRIPTION:THIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, formerly Poetry On The River\, has relocated to the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg\, thanks to Button Quinn\, artist and gallery owner who has graciously made the space available to us. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 5–7 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, April 14\, Blake More\, the featured poet\, will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15–20 minutes\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many readers show up!). She lived in Atlanta for over 20 years before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2015 with her husband\, two children\, dog and cat. She worked at Filoli for several years as a student field trip guide and event coordinator\, and also served on her city’s arts commission. She is currently a graduate student in the San Jose State MFA Creative Writing program\, where she is studying poetry and playwriting. Her poems have appeared in Ploughshares\, SWWIM\, Salamander\, TAB\, DMQ Review\, Rogue Agent\, Fourth River\, Freshwater Review\, and other publications. SUMMARY:Starlight Lounge: Remembering Willits at Playhouse Reading\, WJ Ray and Dan Hibshman
DESCRIPTION:WJ Ray and Dan Hibshman will be reading works that focus on Willits at an event at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse on Saturday March 9. \nRay will be reading his long elegy on Willits\, entitled “The Willits Farewell.” Hibshman will be reading two stories from his recently published book\, Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \n“The Willits Farewell” is an elegy of 220 lines\, nearly the same length as Walt Whitman’s “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed.” In the poem\, Ray catalogs scores of Willits old-timers who flourished here in the second half of the last century.  The poet also offers brief comments about each person\, telling how they fit into the life of Willits\, at least\, as the poet perceived it. The cumulative effect is quite wonderful and powerful. When poet Robin Rule heard Ray read the poem in October of last year she said of the poem\, “It’s a classic! You just told part of the Willits story!” \nDan Hibshman has been a resident of Mendocino County since 1969. He’s worked in the county as an English teacher\, a clerk in a natural foods store\, and as a librarian in the Mendocino County Law Library. He is the author of two books\, Disquiet and Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. Hibshman will read two stories\, “Catch” and “Lost Puppy.” The later story is set on the streets of a fictionalized Willits. \nThe reading begins at 7:30. Entry is by donation; however no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. DESCRIPTION:Step Forward to Nominate or Be the First Poet Laureate of Mendocino County \nThe Mendocino County Poet Laureate Committee is currently seeking nominations for the first Poet Laureate of Mendocino County. The deadline for nominations is February 29th. Nominees will need to submit applications in March and be interviewed in April. This is an official honorary position in which the Poet Laureate will serve for a term of 2 years. The Poet Laureate would be expected to appear at some public functions\, and hopefully engage with not only the poetry community but the broader literary\, Arts\, political\, and educational communities. How the Poet Laureate will do this will be defined by that person’s own creative process. For more information on how to apply or nominate for this position go to http://mendocinopoetlaureate.mymcn.org. DESCRIPTION:As the New Year approaches\, we hope you might find time to enter the 22nd ukiaHaiku Festival contest. Residents of Mendocino\, Lake\, Sonoma\, and Humboldt counties\, from kindergarten age through adult\, can enter haiku in ten different categories (two for Spanish). There is also one category open to planet Earth\, the Jane Reichhold International Award. Writing haiku\, one of the simplest and most accessible forms of poetry\, gives you a chance to capture and reflect upon being present in a special moment of experience. \n\nThere will be a celebration of winning haiku on April 28th\, 2024 at the Civic Center Council Chambers where we invite winners to attend and read their haiku. Winners will receive awards\, including gift certificates to local bookstores. We will also produce a publication of the winning haiku. \n\n\nIn recognition that the Pomo People are the original inhabitants of Mendocino County and that the name Ukiah itself is from a Pomo language\, this year\, we are making an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku that are in Pomo languages or express a Pomo perspective. (These can be written in English\, Spanish and Pomo Languages\, with English translations.) \n\n\nHaiku submissions can be made on our website: www.ukiahaiku.org \n\n\nThe website also has information on writing haiku including advice from the late Jane Reichhold (a haiku scholar)\, in her videoed lesson for local teachers (see “resources” at the bottom of the website page).
