DESCRIPTION:Step Forward to Nominate or Be the First Poet Laureate of Mendocino County \nThe Mendocino County Poet Laureate Committee is currently seeking nominations for the first Poet Laureate of Mendocino County. The deadline for nominations is February 29th. Nominees will need to submit applications in March and be interviewed in April. This is an official honorary position in which the Poet Laureate will serve for a term of 2 years. The Poet Laureate would be expected to appear at some public functions\, and hopefully engage with not only the poetry community but the broader literary\, Arts\, political\, and educational communities. How the Poet Laureate will do this will be defined by that person’s own creative process. For more information on how to apply or nominate for this position go to http://mendocinopoetlaureate.mymcn.org. DESCRIPTION:THIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, formerly Poetry On The River\, has relocated to the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg\, thanks to Button Quinn\, artist and gallery owner who has graciously made the space available to us. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 4–6 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, February 11\, featured poets (TBA) will read in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15–20 minutes\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many readers show up!). SUMMARY:2024 ukiaHaiku Festival - Submission Deadline
DESCRIPTION:As the New Year approaches\, we hope you might find time to enter the 22nd ukiaHaiku Festival contest. Residents of Mendocino\, Lake\, Sonoma\, and Humboldt counties\, from kindergarten age through adult\, can enter haiku in ten different categories (two for Spanish). There is also one category open to planet Earth\, the Jane Reichhold International Award. Writing haiku\, one of the simplest and most accessible forms of poetry\, gives you a chance to capture and reflect upon being present in a special moment of experience. \n\nThere will be a celebration of winning haiku on April 28th\, 2024 at the Civic Center Council Chambers where we invite winners to attend and read their haiku. Winners will receive awards\, including gift certificates to local bookstores. We will also produce a publication of the winning haiku. \n\n\nIn recognition that the Pomo People are the original inhabitants of Mendocino County and that the name Ukiah itself is from a Pomo language\, this year\, we are making an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku that are in Pomo languages or express a Pomo perspective. (These can be written in English\, Spanish and Pomo Languages\, with English translations.) \n\n\nHaiku submissions can be made on our website: www.ukiahaiku.org \n\n\nThe website also has information on writing haiku including advice from the late Jane Reichhold (a haiku scholar)\, in her videoed lesson for local teachers (see “resources” at the bottom of the website page). DESCRIPTION:Heavy Lifting will be part of the exhibit Selections: Rydell Visual Arts Fellows 2006-2021 at the M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from Saturday\, January 27\, 2024 through Sunday\, March 24\, 2024. The curators of the exhibit are Melissa Kreisa and Rose Sellery. This exhibit is in partnership with Community Foundation Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour will be coming to Santa Cruz during this exhibition. The tour will come to the Institute of the Arts & Sciences (IAS)\, University of California at Santa Cruz on Sunday\, March 3 at 3 pm. For venue information\, contact ias@ucsc.edu. \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. The featured reader will be Ukiah writer Dan Hibshman\, launching his new book\, Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \nBorn in Cleveland\, Ohio\, in 1945\, Dan Hibshman has lived in Mendocino County since 1969.   He’s been an English teacher most of those years\, but also a law librarian\, amateur actor/director\, for a little while a clerk in a natural-foods store. He has continually been a writer. In the ‘70s and again in the ‘80s he wrote for the alternative weekly Mendocino Grapevine. He edited books at The Yolla Bolly Press in Round Valley and via that connection wrote Your Affordable Solar Home\, published by Sierra Club Books in 1982. Work experience at the Mendocino County Law Library led to his publication in 2020 of a work of fiction\, Disquiet.  It’s a sequence of linked short stories\, nearly all set inside a rural Northern California county courthouse. \nSince high school Dan has made continual attempts at telling stories\, fictions derived from his life. From time to time he revised some of them\, occasionally began new ones. He kept journals\, particularly of travel\, containing a few true events he developed into narratives. Years went by with those writings stored in boxes. \nIn September he published a collection of work from those boxes. The book’s title is Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \nDan lives with his wife\, Leslie Kirkpatrick\, in Ukiah. \nOpen mic session will follow the featured reading. Maximum time for each reader is six minutes. Event will end at 9 PM. \nNext month: \nNo event in December. There may be a potluck and poetry get together at someone’s house. DESCRIPTION:POETRY ON THE RIVER HAS MORPHED INTO POETRY AT THE COBALT \nTHIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe new reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, formerly Poetry On The River\, has relocated to the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg\, thanks to Button Quinn\, artist and gallery owner who has graciously made the space available to us. The readings are held the last Sunday of the month\, 4–6 pm (Note earlier time!). The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, November 26th\, 4–6 pm\, and will feature poets Mary Rose Kaczorowski and Jamie Armstrong in the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15-20 minutes\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many readers show up!).
