DESCRIPTION:Step Forward to Nominate or Be the First Poet Laureate of Mendocino County \nThe Mendocino County Poet Laureate Committee is currently seeking nominations for the first Poet Laureate of Mendocino County. The deadline for nominations is February 29th. Nominees will need to submit applications in March and be interviewed in April. This is an official honorary position in which the Poet Laureate will serve for a term of 2 years. The Poet Laureate would be expected to appear at some public functions\, and hopefully engage with not only the poetry community but the broader literary\, Arts\, political\, and educational communities. How the Poet Laureate will do this will be defined by that person’s own creative process. For more information on how to apply or nominate for this position go to http://mendocinopoetlaureate.mymcn.org. (If you do not have access to the internet you can send snail mail to: Mendocino County Poet Laureate Program\, P.O. Box 67\, Willits\, CA\, 95490.) Anyone living in Mendocino County can nominate a potential Poet Laureate and a poet can nominate herself or himself. Some of you may not know that we already have a Youth Poet Laureate in Mendocino County. The Poet Laureate Committee believes that Mendocino County also deserves to have an adult Poet Laureate and that the establishment of this position will help enhance the art of poetry making here and inspire all of our citizens about the value and joy of creative literary expression.

SUMMARY:Felicia Rice & Theresa Whitehill: Heavy Lifting at the M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Heavy Lifting will be part of the exhibit Selections: Rydell Visual Arts Fellows 2006-2021 at the M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from Saturday\, January 27\, 2024 through Sunday\, March 24\, 2024. The curators of the exhibit are Melissa Kreisa and Rose Sellery. This exhibit is in partnership with Community Foundation Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour will be coming to Santa Cruz during this exhibition. The tour will come to the Institute of the Arts & Sciences (IAS)\, University of California at Santa Cruz on Sunday\, March 3 at 3 pm. For venue information\, contact ias@ucsc.edu. \nThe Heavy Lifting Listening Tour aspires to offer opportunities for healing\, and dreaming\, through dialogue. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, January 18\, at 7pm The Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Mendocino Youth Poet Laureate and PAHS senior Sidney Regelbrugge.\n \nOn Thursday\, January 18\, at 7pm The Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Point Arena High School Senior and outgoing Mendocino Youth Poet Laureate Sidney Michele Regelbrugge. The reading will take place at Think Visual\, at 240 Main Street (next door to Roots Apothecary). The reading will begin with live improv jazz\, followed by a featured reading with Sidney Michele Regelbrugge\, then an open mic with jazz improv\, and finally the reading will conclude with more live improv jazz. \nBorn and raised in Gualala\, California\, Sidney Michele Regelbrugge has released her first collection of poetry: Questions Asked in the Midst of Midnight. Currently a at Point Arena High School\, Sidney has plans to continue writing and plans to help mentor the new poet laureate when they are chosen in January 2024. \nSidney loves spending time with her family\, hiking with her dogs\, playing volleyball and softball\, and writing poetry! She published her first and only book (so far)\, Questions Asked in the Midst of Midnight\, at 17! \nSidney says\, “I hope those who choose to read this book find comfort in the blunt honesty\, and poetic vocabulary depicting the events and things\, we truly aren’t supposed to say or think! My book is filled with the life of a teenage girl\, struggling and succeeding through the journey of growing up\, and all the adventures within my first 17 years! I hope my book makes you laugh\, gasp\, cry\, and maybe just maybe you find some solace and understanding\, that you are not alone. The readings are now the 2nd Sunday of the month\, 4–6 pm. The next reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, January 14\, and will be an open mic reading. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. DESCRIPTION:Writers Read Ukiah last Thursday poetry series will meet on Thursday\, November 30\, at 7 PM at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. The featured reader will be Ukiah writer Dan Hibshman\, launching his new book\, Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \nBorn in Cleveland\, Ohio\, in 1945\, Dan Hibshman has lived in Mendocino County since 1969.   He’s been an English teacher most of those years\, but also a law librarian\, amateur actor/director\, for a little while a clerk in a natural-foods store. He has continually been a writer. In the ‘70s and again in the ‘80s he wrote for the alternative weekly Mendocino Grapevine. He edited books at The Yolla Bolly Press in Round Valley and via that connection wrote Your Affordable Solar Home\, published by Sierra Club Books in 1982. Work experience at the Mendocino County Law Library led to his publication in 2020 of a work of fiction\, Disquiet.  It’s a sequence of linked short stories\, nearly all set inside a rural Northern California county courthouse. \nSince high school Dan has made continual attempts at telling stories\, fictions derived from his life. From time to time he revised some of them\, occasionally began new ones. He kept journals\, particularly of travel\, containing a few true events he developed into narratives. Years went by with those writings stored in boxes. \nIn September he published a collection of work from those boxes. The book’s title is Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \nDan lives with his wife\, Leslie Kirkpatrick\, in Ukiah. \nOpen mic session will follow the featured reading. Maximum time for each reader is six minutes. Event will end at 9 PM. \nNext month: \nNo event in December. There may be a potluck and poetry get together at someone’s house. DESCRIPTION:POETRY ON THE RIVER HAS MORPHED INTO POETRY AT THE COBALT \nTHIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe Noyo Center for Marine Science can no longer offer space for the poetry series\, as the Slack Tide Cafe has now become the Noyo Center Marine Science Field Station and will be the site of research and education projects including growing red abalone\, setting up seaweed tumbleweed tanks\, and purple urchin ranching—a different kind of poetry! In any case\, we thank the Noyo Center for providing the space for the Poetry On The River readings\, as we move on to continue the poetry series at the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg. \nThe new reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, will be held the last Sunday of the month—however\, at a later time\, 5–7 pm. Our first reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, October 29th\, 5–7 PM\, and will feature poets Tia Ballantine and Mike Edwards the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15 minutes or so\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many show up). Please get this around far and wide\, as we’d like to reach all over Mendocino County and beyond. Any suggestions or ideas you have\, including other people to invite\, would be greatly appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Previously scheduled for 2/23/23\, this event had to be postponed due to the severity of the winter snowstorms in the Ukiah area at that time. \nFor this October event\, a pop-up exhibit of the Heavy Lifting artists’ book will be on display in the Grace Hudson Museum Community Room from Thursday\, October 26 through Sunday\, November 5\, 2023; for museum hours\, see: https://www.gracehudsonmuseum.org/visit \nJoin Writers Read Ukiah in an event celebrating the publication of the limited-edition artists’ book\, Heavy Lifting\, the outcome of a collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. This is part of a series of events in a “listening tour” that will travel to six different population centers in Mendocino and Lake Counties over the spring of 2023 before moving on to other venues in northern California. \nThe evening will include presentation of a short experimental film\, a brief talk by Felicia\, a reading of poetry from the project by Theresa with an opportunity for the audience to respond to the themes and material. Theresa’s reading will be conducted in a round-robin format\, alternating poems from the book with poems or brief statements from the audience. \nThe artists’ book will be displayed along with a prototype of the companion book that includes the full manuscript of poems and documentation of the project. 10% of sales of the companion book will go to support humanitarian aid in Mendocino County. \nThe limited-edition artists’ book Heavy Lifting began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing which sparked a poem which led to a book structure\, then spiraled back round again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating megafire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global Pandemic and the threat of encroaching political totalitarianism. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 19\, at 7pm The Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz Reading Series will feature Prartho Sereno. The reading will take place at the Point Arena Community Center (as well as virtually via Zoom)\, located at 40 School Street in Point Arena. The reading will begin with live improv jazz\, followed by a featured reading with Prartho Sereno\, then an open mic with jazz improv\, and finally the reading will conclude with more live improv jazz.
