DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. SUMMARY:Dan Hibshman\, Writers Read Ukiah
DESCRIPTION:Writers Read Ukiah last Thursday poetry series will meet on Thursday\, November 30\, at 7 PM at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. The featured reader will be Ukiah writer Dan Hibshman\, launching his new book\, Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \nBorn in Cleveland\, Ohio\, in 1945\, Dan Hibshman has lived in Mendocino County since 1969.   He’s been an English teacher most of those years\, but also a law librarian\, amateur actor/director\, for a little while a clerk in a natural-foods store. He has continually been a writer. In the ‘70s and again in the ‘80s he wrote for the alternative weekly Mendocino Grapevine. He edited books at The Yolla Bolly Press in Round Valley and via that connection wrote Your Affordable Solar Home\, published by Sierra Club Books in 1982. Work experience at the Mendocino County Law Library led to his publication in 2020 of a work of fiction\, Disquiet.  It’s a sequence of linked short stories\, nearly all set inside a rural Northern California county courthouse. \nSince high school Dan has made continual attempts at telling stories\, fictions derived from his life. From time to time he revised some of them\, occasionally began new ones. He kept journals\, particularly of travel\, containing a few true events he developed into narratives. Years went by with those writings stored in boxes. \nIn September he published a collection of work from those boxes. The book’s title is Of a Lifetime: Stories 1963-2023. \nDan lives with his wife\, Leslie Kirkpatrick\, in Ukiah. \nOpen mic session will follow the featured reading. Maximum time for each reader is six minutes. Event will end at 9 PM. \nNext month: \nNo event in December. There may be a potluck and poetry get together at someone’s house. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. DESCRIPTION:POETRY ON THE RIVER HAS MORPHED INTO POETRY AT THE COBALT \nTHIS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG\, OLD\, IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING: Rhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties\, styles and non-styles are welcome. \nThe Noyo Center for Marine Science can no longer offer space for the poetry series\, as the Slack Tide Cafe has now become the Noyo Center Marine Science Field Station and will be the site of research and education projects including growing red abalone\, setting up seaweed tumbleweed tanks\, and purple urchin ranching—a different kind of poetry! In any case\, we thank the Noyo Center for providing the space for the Poetry On The River readings\, as we move on to continue the poetry series at the beautiful Cobalt Gallery on Main Street in downtown Fort Bragg. \nThe new reading series\, Poetry At The Cobalt\, will be held the last Sunday of the month—however\, at a later time\, 5–7 pm. Our first reading at the Cobalt Gallery will be Sunday\, October 29th\, 5–7 PM\, and will feature poets Tia Ballantine and Mike Edwards the first hour\, followed by open mic readings. The featured readers read for 15 minutes or so\, and the open mic poets have 5 minutes each (or more depending on how many show up). DESCRIPTION:Previously scheduled for 2/23/23\, this event had to be postponed due to the severity of the winter snowstorms in the Ukiah area at that time. \nFor this October event\, a pop-up exhibit of the Heavy Lifting artists’ book will be on display in the Grace Hudson Museum Community Room from Thursday\, October 26 through Sunday\, November 5\, 2023; for museum hours\, see: https://www.gracehudsonmuseum.org/visit \nJoin Writers Read Ukiah in an event celebrating the publication of the limited-edition artists’ book\, Heavy Lifting\, the outcome of a collaboration between artist/printer Felicia Rice of Moving Parts Press and poet Theresa Whitehill. This is part of a series of events in a “listening tour” that will travel to six different population centers in Mendocino and Lake Counties over the spring of 2023 before moving on to other venues in northern California. \nThe evening will include presentation of a short experimental film\, a brief talk by Felicia\, a reading of poetry from the project by Theresa with an opportunity for the audience to respond to the themes and material. Theresa’s reading will be conducted in a round-robin format\, alternating poems from the book with poems or brief statements from the audience. \nThe artists’ book will be displayed along with a prototype of the companion book that includes the full manuscript of poems and documentation of the project. 10% of sales of the companion book will go to support humanitarian aid in Mendocino County. \nThe limited-edition artists’ book Heavy Lifting began in 2019 with an exchange in which a poem sparked a drawing which sparked a poem which led to a book structure\, then spiraled back round again. In 2020\, during their early work on the project\, Felicia lost her letterpress shop of over 40 years to a devastating megafire in the Santa Cruz Mountains just as the death of George Floyd trained a blazing light on the many deep-seated inequities in this country amid the global Pandemic and the threat of encroaching political totalitarianism. SUMMARY:Daniel Essman: Starlight Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Willits poet Daniel Essman is the featured poet at a poetry reading to be held at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse on Saturday October 14. \nThe reading begins at 7:30 P.M. and entry is by donation. An open reading will follow Essman’s reading. \nDaniel Essman had his first featured reading in 1973. He is a California poet who for several decades joined his wife Robin Rule to co-host the Car Lords Poetry Series in Willits and on the Coast. He also has gained a following as the film reviewer for the Noyo Theatre\, as well as for his signature statement\, “He likes his reality attenuated by the wisdom of the imagination.” To wit\, his poems are from his own imagination and hence are the honest relics of his Senses. \nEntry into this poetry reading is by donation but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. The Willits Community Theatre Playhouse is located at 37 West Van Lane\, a block west of Mazahar Clothing Store and a block south of Pizza To Go.

SUMMARY:Seventh Cascadian Poetry Festival: Bioregional Typography
DESCRIPTION:Clearcutting of languages and cultures has been widespread in Cascadia\, just like the clearcutting of forests. Even so\, this remains a rich and highly varied landscape\, geologically\, biologically\, and linguistically. Cascadian Zen: Bioregional Writings on Cascadia Here and Now is an anthology of pieces written and spoken in English\, but many languages and writing systems are present in the text – mostly as placenames\, personal names\, references\, and quotations. This will be a discussion between two poet/typographers: Theresa Whitehill (who designed the anthology) and Robert Bringhurst. It will start with some of the interesting problems that cropped up in setting volume 1 of the anthology and proceed to the wider context of polylingual typography in Cascadia in general. \nThe date for this talk is Saturday\, October 7\, 2023 1 PM; the venue will be announced and registrants will receive that information before the event. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. DESCRIPTION:Writers Read Ukiah last Thursday poetry series will meet on Thursday\, September 28\, at 7 PM at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. The featured reader will be Santa Rosa poet Robin Gabbert. \nRobin has poems in multiple Redwood Writers Anthologies\, California Writers Club Literary Reviews and “The Best Haiku” 2022 International. Her book Diary of a Mad Poet came out in 2020\, and a book of ekphrastic poetry—The Clandestine Life of Paintings in Poems—in 2022. Her haiku and tanka appear in Burro in My Kitchen\, published by Blue Light Press in 2022\, and two of her poems are being published by Moonstone Arts summer 2023. Robin lives in California’s Sonoma County wine country with her husband Con and pup Hamish. \nRobin’s reading will include a power point presentation about ekphrastic poetry—poems that respond to works of art. \nOpen mic session will follow the featured reading. Maximum time for each reader is six minutes. Event will end at 9 PM. \nWe continue to strongly recommend that you do not attend unless fully vaccinated.
