SUMMARY:Daniel Essman: Starlight Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Willits poet Daniel Essman is the featured poet at a poetry reading to be held at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse on Saturday October 14. \nThe reading begins at 7:30 P.M. and entry is by donation. An open reading will follow Essman’s reading. \nDaniel Essman had his first featured reading in 1973. He is a California poet who for several decades joined his wife Robin Rule to co-host the Car Lords Poetry Series in Willits and on the Coast. He also has gained a following as the film reviewer for the Noyo Theatre\, as well as for his signature statement\, “He likes his reality attenuated by the wisdom of the imagination.” To wit\, his poems are from his own imagination and hence are the honest relics of his Senses. \nEntry into this poetry reading is by donation but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. The Willits Community Theatre Playhouse is located at 37 West Van Lane\, a block west of Mazahar Clothing Store and a block south of Pizza To Go.

SUMMARY:Seventh Cascadian Poetry Festival: Bioregional Typography
DESCRIPTION:Clearcutting of languages and cultures has been widespread in Cascadia\, just like the clearcutting of forests. Even so\, this remains a rich and highly varied landscape\, geologically\, biologically\, and linguistically. Cascadian Zen: Bioregional Writings on Cascadia Here and Now is an anthology of pieces written and spoken in English\, but many languages and writing systems are present in the text – mostly as placenames\, personal names\, references\, and quotations. This will be a discussion between two poet/typographers: Theresa Whitehill (who designed the anthology) and Robert Bringhurst. It will start with some of the interesting problems that cropped up in setting volume 1 of the anthology and proceed to the wider context of polylingual typography in Cascadia in general. \nThe date for this talk is Saturday\, October 7\, 2023 1 PM; the venue will be announced and registrants will receive that information before the event. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. DESCRIPTION:Writers Read Ukiah last Thursday poetry series will meet on Thursday\, September 28\, at 7 PM at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. The featured reader will be Santa Rosa poet Robin Gabbert. \nRobin has poems in multiple Redwood Writers Anthologies\, California Writers Club Literary Reviews and “The Best Haiku” 2022 International. Her book Diary of a Mad Poet came out in 2020\, and a book of ekphrastic poetry—The Clandestine Life of Paintings in Poems—in 2022. Her haiku and tanka appear in Burro in My Kitchen\, published by Blue Light Press in 2022\, and two of her poems are being published by Moonstone Arts summer 2023. Robin lives in California’s Sonoma County wine country with her husband Con and pup Hamish. \nRobin’s reading will include a power point presentation about ekphrastic poetry—poems that respond to works of art. \nOpen mic session will follow the featured reading. How can we utilize creative writing as a vehicle for expressing gratitude and beauty while observing our world and honoring emotions? How can we do all of this using craft elements and literary devices so we don’t cross over into sentimentality? In this workshop\, we will explore how we can nurture our writing lives even in chaotic circumstances. Related topics will include supporting each other through writing communities\, self-doubt\, caring for ourselves as creatives\, and writerly expectations. A presentation will be offered followed by a Q&A\, group discussion\, and generative writing session with optional sharing. \nGeorgina Marie Guardado is the Poet Laureate of Lake County\, CA for 2020-2024\, and a Poets Laureate Fellow with The Academy of American Poets. She is the Literary Editor for The Bloom\, a contributing writer for Antioch University’s Common Thread News\, President of the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference\, and Literacy Program Coordinator for the Lake County Library. As part of the Broken Nose Collective\, an annual chapbook exchange\, she created her first poetry chapbook\, Finding the Roots of Water\, in 2018 and her second chapbook\, Tree Speak\, in 2019. She has received support from the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference\, Napa Valley Writers’ Conference\, Hugo House\, and SF Writing Salon. Her work has appeared in The Bloom\, Noyo Review\, Poets.org\, Humble Pie Magazine\, Gulf Coast Journal\, Yellow Medicine Review\, The Muleskinner Journal\, Colossus: Freedom\, and Two Hawks Quarterly. She is a 1st year graduate student and scholar of the Kwame Dawes Mapmakers and Master of Fine Arts Merit endowments at the Pacific University MFA in Writing program. DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Voices Series \nGeorgina Marie Guardado is Poet Laureate of Lake County\, CA for 2020-2024\, the first Mexican American to serve in this role\, and she also has Mojave descent. The Academy of American Poets awarded her a Poets Laureate Fellow. She is the literary editor for The Bloom\, a contributing writer for Antioch University’s Common Thread News\, president of the Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference\, and Literacy Program Coordinator for the Lake County Library. As part of the Broken Nose Collective\, an annual chapbook exchange\, she created her first poetry chapbooks\, Finding the Roots of Water and Tree Speak. \nLinda Noel is a California native of the Koyongkawi Maidu (Konkow) people from the northern Sierra. She has a chapbook titled\, “Where You First Saw the Eyes of Coyote” and has been a published poet in a variety of anthologies and magazines. She is included in the Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry: When the Light of the World Was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through. She has a piece included in the permanent collection at the Autry Museum of the West and another has been adapted and performed by the Pasadena Choir; she has read her work throughout the country. An introduction to the project opens a display of the artists’ book and of the experimental film\, On Heavy Lifting\, that accompanies the book. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. DESCRIPTION:Lake County Poet Laureate Georgina Marie Guardado will be reading in Willits on Saturday\, August 12\, at the Willits Community Theatre.  An open reading will follow Guardado’s reading. The event will begin at 7:30 P.M. \nGeorgina Marie Guardado is a very dynamic poet and is deeply involved in the literary life of Lake County and parts beyond\, including Mendocino County.  Asked to write a thumbnail sketch of herself\, Guardado wrote\, “I am a writer\, poet and the Poet Laureate of Lake County\, from 2020 to 2024. I am the first Mexican-American and the youngest to serve in this role. I am also of Mojave descent. \n“My work in poetry is very much of the self\, of grief\, of generational trauma\, of longing\, and of nature. I aim to bring diversity\, inclusivity\, and inspiration to my local literary community.” \nEntry into this poetry reading is by donation but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. DESCRIPTION:First Thursday Poetry Open Mic in Fort Bragg\, CA has returned to meeting in person. You can also attend this event via Zoom. \nSince the library is a crossroads and we want to reduce risk of illness\, we still ask you to wear masks while you’re in the audience. Wear a sweater because we need to ventilate the room well. DESCRIPTION:Dedan Gills\nI Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song \nDedan Gills (August 21\, 1945–December 20\, 2015) is co-author\, with Belvie Rooks\, of I Give You the Springtime of My Blushing Heart: A Poetic Love Song\, which has been selected as one of the 29 best poetry books by Speechify for this year’s Poetry Month \nDedan described himself as a “soulutionary.” He was a poet and active member for eight years in one of the first urban intentional environmental communities in the country—the L.A. Eco-Village. Certified in Permaculture\, he was a founding member of the L.A. Permaculture Guild. His poems have appeared in the International Sufi Association Journal. Born in Watts\, California\, Dedan was instrumental in the formation of the Black Student Alliance movement in Southern California and for a time was a member of the Black Panther Party. The demise of the Black Liberation movement was followed by years of despair while trying to find his activist footing on a different ground. He became an unrelenting advocate for human rights and Mother Earth. Dedan worked to integrate principles of permaculture design\, sustainability\, environmental awareness\, and the greening of the inner spirit for healing and recovery. He gave tirelessly to groups of people abandoned by mainstream culture—the homeless and those suffering from addiction and incarceration. He touched many souls while actively and simultaneously addressing their physical\, material\, and emotional wounds. As he was known to say\, “Things come and go\, but the soul is eternal. DESCRIPTION:CALLING ALL POETS\, WRITERS\, READERS\, AND LOVERS OF LITERATURE\, YOUNG AND OLD AND IN BETWEEN\, KNOWN\, UNKNOWN\, SUBMERGED\, EMERGED AND EMERGING:\nRhyming\, free verse\, expensive or expansive verse\, reverses\, metered\, learned\, unlearned\, experimental—all varieties are welcome. \nThis is an invitation to the next Poetry On The River reading at the Slack Tide Cafe on Noyo Harbor in Fort Bragg\, Sunday\, July 30th\, sponsored by the Noyo Center for Marine Science. This is a monthly series\, held on the last Sunday of the month\, 1-3 pm. Sunday\, July 30th will feature Dan Hess and Janferie Stone for the first half of the program\, followed by open mic readings. \nPlease get this around far and wide\, as we’d like to reach all over Mendocino County and beyond.
