SUMMARY:Jeffery Kingman Virtual Point Arena Third Thursday Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Point Arena Third Thursday Poetry presents a virtual Third Thursday Zoom Poetry reading at 7pm on Thursday\, February 17\, 2022. This month features Napa Poet Jeffrey Kingman\, with open mic to follow. \nJeffrey Kingman lives by the Napa River in Vallejo\, California. He has written several books\, including the full-length poetry collection\, Beyond That Hill I Gather (Finishing Line Press\, 2021)\, which won the 2018 Eyelands Book Award (Greece) for an unpublished poetry book. Most of the poems in this book are portraits of women who are notable for their achievements. They are strong\, accomplished women. While this common thread runs throughout the book\, there is much variety since the women come from various walks of life—authors\, musicians\, artists\, comedians\, activists\, suffragists—such as Patti Smith\, Amy Schumer\, Muriel Spark\, Margaret Sanger\, Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun and Sophia Duleep Singh. Each poem captures a different flavor based on the unique personality of each individual. Many of the poems convey a sense of struggle. The struggle to succeed\, to be recognized\, to thrive in a world dominated by men. \nKingman has one other published poetry book entitled On a Road (Finishing Line Press\, 2019). Each poem in this chapbook contains words and phrases borrowed from Kerouac’s On the Road. Many phrases were changed according to his creative needs.  While Kerouac’s book features speedy forward momentum\, this aspect is not reflected in Kingman’s poems. Rather\, it’s Kerouac’s diction that he works and plays with. \nBefore turning his attention to poetry\, Kingman wrote a young adult novel\, Moto Girl (unpublished)\, about a 12-year-old girl learning to ride motocross. This story is an intimate family drama about a preteen and her sister\, mother and stepfather. She places her trust in the stepfather who invests his time in teaching her to ride a dirt bike. But when she suffers abuse at his hands\, relationships in the family begin to disintegrate\, and she must navigate a way beyond the trauma. \nHe also wrote one other book of fiction\, Two Mountains and Other Stories (unpublished). Three of the stories were published in North American Review\, SOMA Literary Review\, and Schuykill Valley Journal. Like his novel\, this book also features intimate family dramas\, including “Monster\,” about a woman’s reaction to a severely disabled man who moves in next door. \nJeffrey Kingman is the winner of the 2012 Revolution House Flash Fiction Contest\, and the winner of the Red Berry Editions 2015 Broadside Contest. He has been a finalist in many contests including the 2018 Hillary Gravendyk Prize poetry book competition\, the 2015 Blue Light Press Chapbook Competition\, the 2014 Sow’s Ear Poetry Competition\, and the 2013 Frost Place Chapbook Fellowship. He has been published in PANK\, Crack the Spine\, The Offbeat\, Sparkle & Blink\, lo-ball\, Off Channel\, Grey Sparrow\, decomP\, Picaroon Poetry\, Visitant and others. \nHe has a Master’s degree in Music Composition and has played drums in rock bands most of his life. \n  \nTo watch or participate as an open mic reader\, please contact Blake More (info below). DESCRIPTION:Partners Gallery presents an exhibit of three guest artists taking place at the gallery in the historic Beacon Building in Mendocino in January and February 2022. The books\, broadsides\, and job work on display of these letterpress artists reside in the realm of book arts—a genre that encompasses all things BOOK. Each artist explores a different approach to letterpress\, a medium born in the 1450s and in danger of extinction when these artists entered the field almost 50 years ago. \nFelicia Rice’s collaborative artists’ books\, Theresa Whitehill’s letterpress poetry broadsides\, and Zida Borcich’s commercial job work embody a love of craft\, a dedication to art\, and a passion for communicating. DESCRIPTION:Point Arena Third Thursday Poetry presents a virtual Third Thursday Zoom Poetry reading at 7pm on Thursday\, January 20\, 2022. This month features Poet Aaron Vessup\, with open mic to follow. \nThe second oldest with fifteen siblings\, Aaron Anthony Vessup\, was born in Los Angeles\, California in a simple house on Vernon Avenue\, In 1957\, writing the “Myna Bird” poem\, he earned California Chaparral of Poets recognition when a student at Mark Twain Elementary School. Later a student at Thomas Edison Jr. High\, in Los Angeles\, Aaron wrote the “Wyatt Earp” cowboy poem\, propelling him into oral speech competitions when the family moved to San Bernardino\, California. \nAaron Vessup prevailed as he became the first black American Junior College “Expository” speech co-champion for the state of California. After graduating from SBVC\, he became “Oratory” champion for the state of Nebraska. Before graduating from Nebraska Wesleyan University (1970) to become a national oratory finalist that same year. Two years later\, while a Grad student at Illinois State University\, he presented a Maya Angelou cutting from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings\, winning the Edward’s gold medal for Oral Interpretation. Subsequently\, as a doctoral candidate at the University of Pittsburgh\, he successfully coached two Bi-Centennial Speech finalists. \nHis long trail of coaching literature lovers came to a brief end\, upon retiring from the teaching role at Elgin Community College in Illinois (2002). He received Professor Emeritus honors. Founder of Cultures In Focus\, a community self-help collaborative\, global travel to over thirty-five countries has kept him hopping. \nIn 2002\, the Australian Poetry Society awarded Aaron Vessup the Bronze Peace Medallion for writing a short poem\, “Peace: An Echoing Shadow.” As a member of the International Platform Association\, he received the Silver Bowl top poetry prize for the baseball poem “Home Run”.  As a lifetime member of the World Congress of Poets\, Aaron Vessup\, performed with this group in Egypt\, Korea\, Israel\, Mexico\, and Taipei. In 2001\, the Academy of Arts and Literature awarded him the Honorary Doctorate of Letters in Literature. In 2002\, he received the Miriam Lindberg Honorable Mention Peace Poetry award for the poem “Writings on the Wall”\, in Tel Aviv\, Israel. Over the years his poems have been anthologized in Best American Poetry collections. \nMoving to China\, Aaron worked in three different provinces\, where he taught Oral English Communication\, Advanced Writing\, and Western Culture classes. Besides poetry\, essay publications\, and televised appearances\, Aaron received the Jilin Provincial “Outstanding Foreign Expert” Award. \nBooks published by Aaron Vessup include: Beyond Cultural Anxieties; Making Cultural Adjustments; Cultural Fusions; and Five poetry collections: Two Swords\, One Heart; Mud Notes Singing; Fires of Desire; Songs for Confucius; and Elements of Love. In addition to having participated in several group and solo international Photography Exhibitions\, contributing travel essays and photographic work to various magazines for cultural bridge-building remains his passion. Two collections of his photography works are: The Lamp Lighters\, and Visual Execution Studies. For five years\, this author contributed to the Beijing Review\, and English Language Learner’s magazines. Earnshaw books of Shanghai published on April 2017\, BLACK IN CHINA\, by Aaron Anthony Vessup. This book promises to make the international Best Seller list. On January 2020\, Fulton Books of Pennsylvania\, released AMERICAN ROBOT\, a memoir containing samples of his seminal early verses. Currently this author has several works in progress\, and resides in Las Vegas\, Nevada. DESCRIPTION:Partners Gallery presents an exhibit of three guest artists taking place at the gallery in the historic Beacon Building in Mendocino in January and February 2022. The books\, broadsides\, and job work on display of these letterpress artists reside in the realm of book arts—a genre that encompasses all things BOOK. Each artist explores a different approach to letterpress\, a medium born in the 1450s and in danger of extinction when these artists entered the field almost 50 years ago. \nFelicia Rice’s collaborative artists’ books\, Theresa Whitehill’s letterpress poetry broadsides\, and Zida Borcich’s commercial job work embody a love of craft\, a dedication to art\, and a passion for communicating.
