SUMMARY:Last Thursday in Ukiah
DESCRIPTION:Last Thursday in Ukiah \nWriters Read Ukiah \n7:00 pm: featured reading followed by open mic\nGrace Hudson Museum Community Room\n431 South Main Street\nUkiah\, CA 95482\nSuggested donation: $5\nRefreshments provided \n2020 Schedule \nAugust Update: Writers Read Ukiah is canceled for the time being and will resume at some point when conditions are better suited for live readings. \nFrom co-producer Dan Barth: Once again we are sad to announce that our monthly Writers Read event has been cancelled. Our venue\, the Grace Hudson Museum\, had reopened\, but was forced to close again when Mendocino County had a spike in Covid-19 cases. At the moment\, all bets are off. We will resume when we can. We have discussed doing virtual readings and have decided against that for now. Seeing all those names [reviewing the Writers Read list for the past two years] makes me realize what a good thing we had going. And of course the open mic session was a big part of each month’s event. I miss seeing those of you who attended almost every month. Keep writing\, save all your good work and be ready to rock n roll when the time comes. \nThursday\, October 29\, 2020: Molly Fisk (PENDING) \nThursday November 19\, 2020 (1 week early due to the Thanksgiving holiday): Mark McGovern (PENDING) \nDecember 2020 (date to be confirmed): Virgin of Guadalupe reading; a co-production of the Grace Hudson Museum\, the City of Ukiah Poet Laureate Committee\, Bill Churchill\, and Theresa Whitehill \nFor Information\, contact Series co-producers\, Dan Barth\, bookem@pacific.net or Michael Riedell\, innisfree@pacific.net \nThis reading series is sponsored in part by Poets & Writers\, through a grant from the James Irvine Foundation and the Hearst Foundation. Additional support provided by an anonymous local writer\, Michael Riedell\, Dan Barth\, Bill “Jabez” Churchill\, The Poet Laureate Committee of Ukiah\, Grace Hudson Museum\, and donations. \nA little history: Writers Read\, founded by Susan Sparrow and Hal Zina Bennett of Tenacity Press\, has been happening monthly on the last Thursday of the month since 1999 in Ukiah\, California\, starting at the Emerald Cafe\, moving to the Saturday Afternoon Club\, then to Colored Horse Studios for five years (2004-2009) and as of 2009\, back almost full-circle to Art Center Ukiah’s annex\, which is next door to the former location of the Emerald Cafe. Dan Barth and Theresa Whitehill co-produced the series with Susan and Hal for many years. As of August 2014\, Bill Churchill took over producing the series with Theresa Whitehill as co-producer. As of January 2017\, Michael Riedell has taken over hosting the series\, with Theresa Whitehill\, Dan Barth\, and Bill Churchill as co-producers. As of January 2019\, the series moved to the Grace Hudson Museum Community Room. Michael Riedell and Dan Barth co-produce and co-host the series.

SUMMARY:Rhythm Running River on KZYX Public Radio
DESCRIPTION:Rhythm Running River poetry programming every 1st Sunday 3-4 pm and every 3rd Sunday 3 to 5 pm on KZYX&Z Public Radio\, 90.7\, 91.5\, and 88.1 FM with host Dan Roberts. On Sunday\, October 18\, 2020\, Dan Roberts will continue broadcasting poems submitted for the Mendocino Spring Reading. \nFor playlists\, visit Rhythm Running River on Out Far Press. Stream the audio here. \nAbout the Mendocino Spring Reading from Dan Roberts\, Co-producer: \n\n46 poets sent me their smartphone poems\, many sent 2 or 3 poems. Amazing variety\, all well done. I edited (fixed beginnings and ends\, took out pops\, and applied noise reduction) only to improve broadcast quality\, and I have over 100 poems ready to be aired in the next few months of RhythmRunningRiver. (first and third Sunday of each month)\n     The number of poems made me think\, where do I start? So I decided to pick 25 poems\, some of every level of the art\, and tried to match them with a musical piece in between. I like how the first hour sounds\, you will as well.  I need to get the whole show done by Friday afternoon because I am not going into town yet. I ended up with 11 poems in the first hour\, think there will be 9 or 10 in the second hour.\n     I did not choose any poets whose work was used in the previous show (June 7). I know we used the term “main event” in promotion. I do not believe that this is a selection of only the very best. Please do not feel slighted if yours is not in this particular show. The succeeding shows will be of equal quality. I promise that I will air at least one of every poet’s work in the next 4 shows\, as I always have. I really try to be democratic about the whole thing.\n     So tune in this Sunday from 3-5\, I will send you the playlist by Saturday and put you on my mailing list for future shows. Thank you for being part of yet another experiment in 2020.

Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.\nTheresa Whitehill \nA treat planned for the virtual Gala program is a poem\, specially written for the the occasion and performed by Theresa Whitehill\, a former Ukiah poet laureate and good friend of the Grace Hudson Museum. SUMMARY:Prescriptions for Life: Collages & Writings
DESCRIPTION:Prescriptions for Life: Collages & Writings\nA Collaboration between Paula Gray & Theresa Whitehill \nIn this exhibition\, visual artist Paula Gray and poet Theresa Whitehill\, both of Mendocino County in northern California\, collaborate on the theme of “prescriptions for life\,” based on collages Paula created from a nineteenth century medical prescription ledger\, along with Theresa’s writings exploring related themes\, presented as a series of letterpress broadsides. The exhibit included the loan of two antique medical prescription ledgers (nineteenth and early twentieth century) from the University of California at San Francisco Library. \nThe exhibit opened the week that San Francisco underwent Shelter in Place orders due to the novel coronavirus and was closed within several days. The gallery never reopened before the exhibit closed in July of 2020. \nExhibit Dates: Wednesday\, March 4 through Thursday\, July 30\, 2020 \nDesasi | Matta Gallery\nDeirdre Visser\, Art Curator\nCalifornia Institute of Integral Studies\n1453 Mission Street\, San Francisco\, CA \nResources: \nFlyer (pdf): https://www.coloredhorse.com/pages/poetry/pdf/Prescriptions-for-Life-Exhibit-2020.pdf \nFor more information: \nVirtual Exhibit Tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agt-djjlH94&utm_source=Arts+at+CIIS&utm_campaign=dd2de76735-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_10_18_07_25_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_2d78fa92d4-dd2de76735-233245311 \nSee the feature on the website of the California Institute of Integral Studies \nEssay on the collaborative process by curator Deirdre Visser: https://medium.com/@webciissf/prescriptions-for-survival-in-a-time-of-global-pandemic-175827d4029 \nSee this resource page for further information: https://www.coloredhorse.com/pages/prescriptions/
